Good Distribution defines financial success
What is Distribution? Simply put, no matter the territory or media, it is the marketing of your movie to potential buyers. Who and how your movie is distributed determines its financial success.
There are generally two major classifications of territory; domestic and foreign. There may be different definitions out there, but usually domestic pertains to USA, Canada, and Mexico while Foreign covers everything else. Also, most of the time there is more than one buyer per territory and media.
Now for some good news, distributors want and need product. Like we discussed about a good script finding a buyer, it is also said a good movie will always find a distributor. If they didn't want to view movies, why would they have acquisition departments and personnel.
Generally, the better and the more marketable the movie, the stronger the distributor. Think you have heard me say this before, it's all about money! Simply, it's another part of the business of filmmaking.
Earlier you got some good news; now for some bad news. From my experiences, which I will talk more in detail in the My Productions section, I wish I had met with the prospective distributors carrying a huge cross and wearing a garlic necklace.
Yep, you guessed it. Just like so many other little movie makers, my worst experiences in the movie industry came in Distribution. I don't know how many times a fellow producer told me that if they got any payment from their distributor, it usually happened on the courthouse steps just prior to their court appearance.
I can't tell you the number of times I was told by other producers that finding a good honest distributor is more difficult than making a good movie. Hell, they all steal. The trick was finding the one who steals the least.
